The Kurds are a large ethnic group that has long lived in the same region, and which traces their roots back to the Medes of ancient Persia. It has been said that Kurds “hold their Islam lightly,” not identifying with their faith as closely as most Arabs do. Many Kurds still feel some connection with the ancient Zoroastrian faith, seeing it as an original Kurdish spirituality that far predates the seventh century AD arrival of Muhammad. Nonetheless, most Kurds are Sunni Muslims.
